Pepato, the second time around

I have read about how good Gaita Fores' Crepe Cake is but wasn't able to try it until yesterday.

I was scanning each and every menu of the restos along the Greenbelt 2 area when I read of it at Pepato's menu.

The Crepe Cake can only be bought thru advance orders and as a whole cake, so I was relieved that Pepato sell it by the slice at P185.

Photobucket
Crepe Millefoglie is of Italian origin, specifically in Naples. It was earlier called as gateau de mille-feuilles or cake of a thousand leaves. True to form, Pepato's Crepe Millefoglie is made of 35 layers of thin crepes with custard filling in between those layers. It is then drizzled with an orange and dark chocolate sauce and served with grapes on top of an orange sauce on the side.

Photobucket
I found the Millefoglie too heavy when taken as a whole, but light when eaten layer by layer. I love the taste of the torched or rather caramelized areas on the crepes, it complemented well with the custard filling. I also prefer the Millefoglie bare or with just the dark chocolate sauce and none of the orange sauce.

Photobucket
The grapes it was served with counteracted the "suya" factor that you'll definitely feel when you eat this. It is also best eaten paired with coffee or tea for easy digestion.

Btw, they serve free breads in different forms, the bacon-shaped ones are my fave from these selection.

Felix and Zuni

I can't seem to get enough of the new restaurants of Greenbelt 5. In fact, I went there again last week and dined in two of them, Felix and Zuni.

Instead of main course/entree then dessert, I had it the other way around.

I went in Felix and had a dessert cake known as Angelina P180.

It is layers of graham crust, custard, ice cream and meringue, drizzled with caramel syrup and topped with sliced grapes.

The cake tasted like the frozen brazo of Sweet Life by Ange but less sweet.

Personally, I don't like the grapes on top. It didn't complement the cake but just added color contrast. Peaches or mangoes would make better substitutes.

Though good, I found the cake expensive for its size. I can have a baby brazo from Sweet Life for just a few more peso.

While waiting for your order they'll give you complimentary breads like whole wheat roll or bonete with butter. I asked for the bonete.

Bonete is a traditional cone-shaped bread from Liliw. It was soft, fluffy and sweet.

By the way, I have read in the Inquirer that Felix is owned by Richard & Lucy Gomez, Ben Chan and Florabel Co (of Ten Titas & Florabel).

For my entree, I went to Zuni, just beside Felix. I ordered the Angus Beef Steak Sandwich P275. An order of it comes with potato fries.

The Angus Beef Steak Sandwich has strips of Angus beef, caramelized onions, lettuce & tomatoes, in between ciabatta bread with mustard spread.

The Angus beef was sliced very thinly but still came out juicy and sweet, paired with the tanginess of the mustard sauce. Though I would love if it has cheese in it, like a Philly cheese steak. Because it really lacked something in taste.

The thick-cut potato fries have a hint of crab taste in it, why and how I don't know.

Of the 3 restaurants, Myron's, Felix and Zuni, that I have eaten in, I found Myron's food taste better. But Felix and Zuni's service are impeccable. They were fast, friendly, attentive and accommodating.

Myron's Place

Out last Friday at Greenbelt, I was excited to have dinner at Cascada. unfortunately, the restaurant's already closed, permanently =(

With nowhere to eat and with my tummy already grumbling, I settled in one of the newly-opened restaurants at Greenbelt 5, Myron's Place.

It was said that they're famous for their steaks and burgers. With that in mind and with the server's recommendation, I ordered their Wagyu Burger P395.

While waiting they'll serve you Honey Rye Bread with Butter. In my case, the complimentary bread and my order of wagyu burger came simultaneously after almost 25 minutes.

Just imagine my dismay waiting for more than 20 minutes without anything to eat. Points off for their slow service and inattentive staff.

The optimist in me still believes that it was a blessing in disguise, since I was able to try pairing the honey rye bread with the wagyu patty, which I found heavenly. I really think they should add it in their menu =)

The complimentary honey rye bread looked and tasted like it was made of and with chocolates. It was also exceptionally good buttered down.

The Wagyu Burger is made-up of a soft and buttery bun, with a thin spread of mayonnaise, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms and a couple of big and perfectly seasoned onion rings. An order of the burger comes with thick-cut fries.

The wagyu patty (medium) was lean, thick and juicy. I also love how it retained its juiciness even after spending more than a day in the ref (I took home half of the burger).

Another recommendation and an obvious best seller (based on the number of people having that dessert that day), was the Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding P160. The pudding comes with a shot glass of toffee-butterscotch sauce and topped with a scoop of ice cream.

The pudding was dense and creamy but not too sweet, complemented by the strong toffee flavor of the sauce. Their toffee sauce tasted the same as that of Mezzaluna's, strong and dark.

And what better way to have your pudding, but ala mode. They have ice cream flavor options, like vanilla, strawberry or dark caramel. I chose the latter.

As expected the flavor complemented the creaminess of the pudding and the dark flavor of the toffee sauce by adding some sweetness.

It was one of the best bread pudding I have ever had, and frankly, I had a lot. For the taste, it was second only to Mezzaluna's, since the latter has dates in it and the snap cone was very tasty. Size-wise, I prefer Myron's and also when you want it less sweet.

Myron's food, from the complimentary honey rye bread down to the bread pudding, were all exceptionally good. There are only 2 areas they should work on. Their service, which was slow and inattentive (particularly the female servers). There was also lack of knowledge of their menu (again, female servers). And second, even if the interiors and ambiance were good, the prevalence of flies even inside the restaurant killed it.

In spite all of these negative things about their service and the flies, there's nothing negative I can say about their food. In fact, I'm even planning on a return visit soon and perhaps ordering their Moroccan Lamb Shanks or their Duet of Bacon Wrapped Angus Steak and Grilled Prawns and maybe their Banana Cream Pie.

A Take-Out Meal

I was at Greenbelt yesterday and was really hoping to try Cascada's Crab Cake. Since it wasn't available, I just bought an order of Roasted Potatoes with Bacon, Sour Cream & Chives P80, also from Cascada in Greenbelt to try.

The potatoes were glistening in butter, mixed in with chives and topped with sour cream & bacon.

It tasted and looked liked a baked potato with sour cream & bacon except that it was cut in wedges. Be sure to have a piece of every thing in every bite for a more satisfying taste & experience.

To complete my dinner, I ordered the P99 Rodeo Cheeseburger Meal of Burger King.

***Sprite Light not included***
It has rodeo cheeseburger, a regular serving of fries or onion rings, a regular drink and brownie ala mode for dessert.

The Rodeo Cheeseburger is made of BK's flame-broiled beef patty, topped with melted cheese and onion rings on a sesame seed bun with BBQ sauce spread.

I liked the smoky flavor of the patty and the tanginess of the sauce, mixed in with the tartness of the cheese. An added bonus was the onion rings on top, which were perfectly seasoned and which I am beginning to love just now.

The Brownie ala Mode didn't taste nor look like a brownie but more of a molten/lava cake, with the choco fudge as the "lava".

And for all of these for just P99, you'll get more for your money.

Pepato

Makati has a lot of restaurants, choosing where to eat can sometimes be a predicament.

That night, I chose Pepato. I have always wanted to try their Green Ravioli P190 (for tasting) and the Il Fiato P185.

The Green Ravioli is made of fresh pasta stuffed with crab meat & crab roe duet on a calamansi cream sauce.

I thought that 5 pieces of it for tasting would be okay, since I can get by with half an order of ravioli from CPK which is just 6 pieces. But when it was served on my table, I was surprised with its size. It was half the size of a normal ravioli, it was also very thin almost fragile looking.

The taste though were another story. It was good, from the combination of the crab meat and crab roe, to the calamansi cream sauce. The calamansi subdued the fishy taste of the crab meat, it also made the sauce light and refreshing.

Since it was written on their menu to allow 20 minutes for their Il Fiato to be served, I ordered it ahead of the pasta. It came just in time, just after my pasta meal.

It was one of the 21 Sinful Desserts of the Manila Standard Anniversary Supplement.
Il Fiato or Chocolate Breath in English, was chocolate souffle with a shot glass of white chocolate sauce and crushed macadamia nut brittle.

The chocolate souffle has the consistency & texture of a chocolate cake batter but with a crusty outer layer, while the white chocolate sauce resembled condensed milk in taste.

While waiting for my meal, I was given complimentary flavored bread sticks (spinach, beets, etc.) & breads, with whipped butter & olive oil.

The way they served the breads was different, it was on a stand, covered with white cloth to maintain its temperature.

The breads were soft & creamy (pandesal) and crusty (spinach). The flavored bread sticks & flat breads were also good.

All in all, the food's good, just a bit expensive for their size. It was also one of the rare occasion where I came out of the resto still feeling light, not stuffed as I normally do.

I guessed I have to train myself with this kind of eating, especially at night.
