Red Ribbon Brazo de Mercedes

I wanted something with chocolate but decided to give this new product a try.

I didn't like it. I didn't like the too sweet custard and the bland meringue.

Cocoa Poppers and Frostings Cupcakes

Since I always buy sweets to eat at home, I bought my favorite Cocoa Poppers at Parvati in Trinoma and cupcakes at Frostings.

At Frostings I bought my favorite, Brazo de Mercedes, and 3 new cupcake flavors, Chocolate Blackout, Milk Chocolate (formerly known as Swiss Chocolate) and White Chocolate Red Velvet.

I didn't like the Blackout and Milk Chocolate as they just tasted sweet and didn't taste of chocolate. But what I happened to like more was the White Chocolate Cuplet as that tiny cupcake has 3 layers of white chocolate (top, middle and bottom) and 2 layers of red velvet cake.

Max's Brazo de Mercedes

My sister and my pamangkins are still on vacation in our house. I just went out and wanted to buy something to bring home to them. I was left with two choices. An assorted brownie pack from Brownies Unlimited or Max's Brazo de Mercedes. I chose the latter.

It was different from Goldilocks version as it was not that sweet. You can eat a lot without even knowing.
I like it, and would even buy one again soon.

FROSTINGS

Photobucket
I have tried one of their best sellers, the Belgian several months ago and I wasn’t that impressed. But a couple of months back my sister and niece bought a couple to try and liked it. I then decided to give them another chance with their other flavours.

Photobucket
I bought Brazo de Mercedes, Lemon Meringue, Choco Lava and Double Dutch at P40 each.

Photobucket

Brazo de Mercedes is butter cake topped and filled with custard and iced with boiled/marshmallow icing and custard rosette.

Photobucket
This is my favourite from the four cupcakes, sweetened just right. Unlike the traditional Brazo, this has butter cake that cuts the cloying effect that a Brazo often gives.

Photobucket
I also think that this should be eaten right away or after a couple of minutes outside the chiller. The icing melts and deflates easily and the custard hardens when chilled.

The Double Dutch is marble cake with double dutch icing and chocolate fudge filling.

The fudge and icing were good though it would have been better if it’s chocolate cake instead of marble.

Photobucket
The Choco Lava is chocolate cake with choco fudge center, topped with marshmallow icing and a chocolate block.

Photobucket
I like the moist cake and the fudge, but I don’t like the airiness of the icing.

Photobucket

The Lemon Meringue is lemon-butter cake with lemon curd filling, topped with lemon-flavored meringue icing.

Though this was also good, I found the lemon curd to tangy for my taste.

From my recent purchases, I am now impressed with their cupcakes and am planning to try more soon. I have also observed that all the cupcakes I bought have fillings.

La Nuova Pasteleria

One day I was thinking of what dessert to try next. I've been eating s'mores & bud-bud kabog alternately these couple of days, I needed a break.

I thought of La Nuova in Forbes Park.

I ordered Canonigo and Strawberry Shortcake, both of which were sold-out. Not wanting for my efforts to go to waste I ordered the next best thing. The server and a newspaper article displayed on the wall, said that the Concorde is a must-try. So, I ordered a slice of it and of Brazo de Mercedes (which resembles Canonigo).

CONCORDE
A chocolate mousse & soft vanilla flavored sponge cake, that crowned with rolls of crunchy yet delicate chocolate meringue.

The Concorde was good, the mousse was good with just the right sweetness. And the meringue added crunch to the cake and broke its creaminess.

BRAZO DE MERCEDES

The Brazo de Mercedes was just so-so. Though big in size and looked good, it's just okay tasting. Not something that I'll order again.

JUST SEE HOW BIG AN ORDER IS

I hope to try their Canonigo, which a blogger said he would come back again and again for, and their Strawberry Shortcake, which another blogger said, was the best he ever tasted.

I should call in advance next time and inquire first of their (Canonigo & Strawberry Shortcake) availability.

P.S. Almost all of the cakes on display were already reserved, just the two that I ordered were available. They're that famous around that area for their cakes.
